I was inspired for this post by Ms. Sarai’s recognition of Pres. Obama’s ability to elevate the moral and intellectual conscience and conversation regarding his ‘Dr. Gates & the boogey’ faux pas with such grace and tolerance.
In my book Grace and Tolerance are important. If I’m reading her correctly, here are the appropriate dictionary definitions:
GRACE: a pleasing or attractive quality or endowment, good will, Moral Strength; the grace to perform a duty.
TOLERANCE: a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one’s own; freedom from bigotry.
I am presuming, of course, when the two Black men sit down with the White man, to share an icy cold brewski, that the Black men will be able to confess that the bigotry Pres. Obama and Dr. Gates showed towards Sgt. Crowley, and White cops in general, is out of place in this day and age. I, too, heartily commend Pres. Obama for the lesson learned here, that once Black men get rid of the race card out their life’s deck, their dealings with White cops will vastly improve.
Do White cops have anything to learn? Absolutely! Of 100 Black men encountered under suspicious circumstances, at least 10 of them will be entirely guilt-free. Once their guilt-free status is ascertained, keep your fingers crossed that they learned the lesson that Pres. Obama is gracefully and toleranting trying to teach them.
Amen.
