Take a look at  the  picture on this news site.  There appears to  be  some  strange ghoul like creature behind Officer  Crowleys left shoulder that  is  over looking  the beer summit.

Now, I  don’t  want to  be an  alarmist  but   it  seriously  looks like  the  ghost of Michael Jackson …….

Slipping Down the Slope to the Nanny State …

Tags:

When CA passed a law mandating motorcyclists to wear helmet, it wasn’t hard to justify it:  Not only was it for the riders own good, but it saved tax dollars because, as the studies clearly showed, M/C riders had less serious injuries when they crashed wearing helmets, and fewer of them thus became burdens on the State.

And the Constitution does say that as a nation, we the people shall, among other things, ‘…promote the general welfare…” amongst ourselves…

But will a line be crossed if, as nation policy, we ‘punish’ fat/unhealthy people in the hope of making them skinny/healthy people?  Read this paraphrasing from a recent report (These aren’t my words; I’ve just rearranged them):

“Key among the “interventions” is an excise or sales tax on fattening foods.  This would have the effect of lowering the consumption of those foods.  AND it would also generate revenues to fund health insurance coverage to fund campaigns intended to make healthy foods more widely available to low-income Americans and to encourage exercise and healthy eating habits.”

Here’s my primary double question:  who decides what foods are fattening and how much is the tax?

As for whether this is ‘good’ or ‘bad’, obviously we will have different opinions, just as we will have different opinions as to where what I’m calling a slippery slope may lead us.  And yes, I do understand that Ms. Sarai and Ms. Stasis will perhaps say that it’s not a slippery slope, but a climb up to heaven.

But at least with all the new beauracracies that this another forms of nannyism will create, unemployment should drop.

Hey, Everybody, Let’s all sit down and have a Beer !!

I was inspired for this post by Ms. Sarai’s recognition of Pres. Obama’s ability to elevate the moral and intellectual conscience and conversation regarding his ‘Dr. Gates & the boogey’ faux pas with such grace and tolerance.

In my book Grace and Tolerance are important.  If I’m reading her correctly, here are the appropriate dictionary definitions:

GRACE: a pleasing or attractive quality or endowment, good will, Moral Strength; the grace to perform a duty.

TOLERANCE:  a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one’s own; freedom from bigotry.

I am presuming, of course, when the two Black men sit down with the White man, to share an icy cold brewski, that the Black men will be able to confess that the bigotry Pres. Obama and Dr. Gates showed towards Sgt. Crowley, and White cops in general, is out of place in this day and age.  I, too, heartily commend Pres. Obama for the lesson learned here, that once Black men get rid of the race card out their life’s deck, their dealings with White cops will vastly improve.

Do White cops have anything to learn?  Absolutely!  Of 100 Black men encountered under suspicious circumstances, at least 10 of them will be entirely guilt-free.  Once their guilt-free status is ascertained, keep your fingers crossed that they learned the lesson that Pres. Obama is gracefully and toleranting trying to teach them.

Amen.

Hallucinating?

The Unlikely Disciple:  A Sinner’s Semester at America’s Holiest University

I started reading this last night at Barnes and Noble (will order it from Amazon when I can afford it).  It’s about a kid who transfers from Brown to Liberty for a semester and his experiences.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

I’m watching this movie right now and it’s amazing to me how young they all look. There’s something very odd about Richard Dreyfuss’ teeth. Terry Garr plays such a fucking shrew it’s unbelieveable. Those kids are so damn annoying too.

But, good movie. Well acted.
